Why Posture is Important

We have all been told at some point, that we should sit up straight, walk with our shoulders back, and our head up.  Why are we told to do so?  Does it really benefit our health to have good posture?  The answer is yes. It does so, significantly.

Maintaining good posture makes you feel better about yourself.  Studies show that those struggling with depression, tend to hunch over more, round their shoulders, look to the ground, and keep to themselves.  When you pull your shoulders back, and lift your head to look people in the eye, you expand the amount of space you take up.  This releases testosterone, and consequently results in you feeling better about yourself.

Think of the body like a structure.  When things are in the proper alignment and are stacked properly on each other, the structure can handle more weight and perform better.  All of the functions in the body–cardiovascular, immune, central nervous, etc, work better when the body is properly aligned.  The body will get out of alignment when it must overcompensate for itself–that is the signal your body sends (in the form of pain), to let you know that something is wrong.

I learned this lesson the hard way.  My knee problems began when I would squat heavy weight.  This affected my ability to play basketball.  I saw over twenty different people–from physical therapists to Chiropractors, and acupuncturists, in an effort to remedy my knee.  They were effective, but nothing so effective that I would be able to lift heavy weights and play basketball again. This went on for two years, until I learned about the Egoscue method.  It was only after getting my body back into alignment through exercises and stretches, that I was able to go back to lifting heavy weights and playing basketball without issue. Not only am I doing both of these things again, but I am performing at a higher level than prior to my injuries.  It’s worked so well for me, that I sought and have now been certified in the technique.  DM Athletics is now the only training facility in the State of Washington, that is offering this service to our athletes.

Muscles that are not firing properly, cause the bones in our bodies to shift. In the majority of cases, the muscles are small and hard to target, unless one knows what they are doing.  By putting the body back into alignment and strengthening the small muscles, the body is able to maintain alignment.

The Egoscue method has been used by pro athletes such as Junior Seau, Brian Urlacher, Justin Tuck, and Phil Mickleson, to help them return from pain, and back to performing better than ever.  You now have the option of putting yourself in the best position to be successful in your sport.  Contact us now and let us help you discover your potential.
