We often times are told run faster, or take quicker steps when you start running to improve your speed. Click here and see what we found to be the most effective technique for getting up to top speed.
Step 1: Practice the first step
Now that you see what the first step look likes. Practice it. If possible have someone video it for you and review it to make sure you are doing it right. Get at least 10 reps at just taking the proper step.
Step 2: Use the technique while sprinting 5 yards
The reason we want you to just run 5 yards is because you can get a lot of practice in a small space without getting tired. Keep in mind that you are pushing to generate power and not reaching with your leg. You can keep practicing until you get to 5 yards in 3 steps. Once you get a good grasp of doing that correctly you are ready to move on to the next step.
Step 3: Open up the distance to 10 yards or more
Even when running more than 5 yard, your main focus should be the first 5 to 10 yards because that is where you can make the most improvements. You must continue to do the same thing with your hips and feet to make sure you are running your best. Push and get full extension from your hips in every step. This is not something you can think about while running but you can pick up on it if you have someone to video you. The only thought should be to push every step.
Step 4: Practice every chance you get
While training on your own or running with your team, practice the technique all the time. You want to practice it so much that it becomes ingrained into you and just becomes the way you run. Olympic sprinters still practice this concept throughout their entire careers. There is never a point that they get to and then think they do not need to practice it any longer. Obviously, they are on a higher level of mastery than any other athlete in regards to sprinting but we must do our best at the level we are at. Practice, practice, practice!
Stay tuned until next week when we release our next tutorial!
