When we first get athletes and start lifting weights, no matter what level they are in, most of the time their technique is not where it needs to be. This is probably the most evident in the preforming the bench press. The reason this lift is not set up properly by most people is because it is so easy to do without the proper technique so people normally stick with what they have always done. What we have seen in terms of results with people just using the proper technique has been tremendous. One of our athletes gained 80lbs on his bench press in just six short weeks of practicing the proper technique and executing our lifting program. Check out the video below and we hope it adds a lot of gains to your bench press!
There is a whole group of coaches that do not bother doing the bench press with their athletes for several reasons. The reasons why we do it for our athletes are because they will be asked to do it in college or when they return to their team. Bench press is a staple in mostly all strength programs. If our athletes show up to college or their professional team without the proper technique and not as strong as their competition, it will work against them. Another reason why we do it is because there is no other exercise that can improve overall upper body strength like the bench press.
Action Steps:
1. Do you currently use this technique?
2. If not, implement it to your training. Do not try this for the first time on a one rep max out day.
3. Do this technique every time you bench.
