In helping athletes perform their best, we have found that their beliefs about themselves and what they are capable of is the most important part of how they perform in practice and in games. We have worked specifically on improving this mental component with our athletes and what we have found is that different things work for each individual. Some of our athletes responded well to high-energy workouts, others to competition and some have sat down with a sports psychologist to get their mental game where it needs to be to perform their best. Sometimes certain athletes require more work to undo the beliefs they have formed about themselves. This isn’t surprising when you understand that most of these athletes are in high school, so they have developed and strengthened these beliefs for years. It’s only logical that it will take some time to retrain new beliefs and behaviors.
We continue to find ways and stories that might help our athletes break through their mental barriers, regardless of how long it takes. The video below is a great story of how one person broke past the perceived limitations to accomplish the “impossible.” The lasting effect is visible by what the others were enabled to do as a result of these mental barriers being broken down.
Action for Today:
Fill in the blanks about yourself (or the limiting beliefs that you have), then say the full statement out loud:
I used to believe that _________, but now I am getting better at _________ every day.
It’s time you believe!
Sincerely,
Donny Mateaki
