Our mindset is a big part in determining our success in athletics, as well as every part of our lives. One particular concept that aim to focus on, is preventing negative thoughts from taking a home in our minds. Borrowing one of the rules that Pete Carroll set out for his teams, allows us to do so, by not letting negativity capture our mindset.
Pete Carroll’s rule of No Whining, No Complaining, No Excuses!, gets straight to the heart of the matter. Complaining and making excuses, will never assist in achieving our goals. This rule is key, in regards to your mindset. Pete Carroll himself, said that he has struggled with this at times. So whining, complaining, and excuses are of course, very normal human reactions.
If we practice taking notice of when we are doing these things, and re-focus on looking for a solution or something we can control, it will likely give us a better outcome, the next time. By reminding ourselves of this rule, we create boundaries, disallowing our minds to wander too far into the negative realm–again, focusing on what’s truly important. Nothing great is accomplished through negative thinking.
We have added this to our requirement for athletes that work with us. We realize that whining, complaining, and making excuses does not only ruin the workout for the athlete, but for everyone else in the group–as well as for the coach who is leading the group.
Our purpose is to help each athlete we work with, to perform at their highest level. If you are ready to quit making excuses for yourself, and to perform your best, call us now to set up a free consultation.
Sincerely,
Donny Mateaki
