When I started lifting weights in sixth grade, I thought that strength training was all about lifting as much as you can in different lifts. I did not know that there are several other factors that can help or hurt the results you get.
For starters I had no idea how important small muscles were to the body. In high school I thought that doing anything with 5lbs to 15lbs of weight to strengthen my rotator cuffs was a big waste of my time. I told my coaches that I do not do any exercises with less than 50lbs of weight. During my junior year I tried to bench 425lbs and tore rotator cuff and found out really quickly how important those small muscles are.
Another part I did not know about was functional movement. The body is designed to move in a certain way and when the body is unable to do so, it means that something is tight, weak or out of alinement. It has taken me forever to get my strength back to where I was in high school. I failed and was frustrated a lot, especially when I would coach many athletes out of their dysfunction and improve their strength to an all-time best while mine got worse.
I am happy to say that my strength is finally back after years of testing and trying different things to see what works.
