For those of us who are football fans, we know that the Green Bay Packers just lost their star receiver, Jordy Nelson, for the season due to an ACL injury. Nelson is an important part to the Packers offense and now it does not look like they will have the same success they had last season with Nelson. Nelson is one of the best receivers in the NFL so replacing his production is extremely difficult for any team.
What we do in our field when any of our athletes get hurt is evaluate what we could have done if anything to help prevent that injury. So let’s analyze this injury and see if we can find anything that could have been done to prevent this from happening. Let’s watch the play again.
If you noticed, Nelson did not get hit on the play. The ACL most likely tore when he landed because he just dropped to the ground right after he made the catch and landed. It is highly unlikely that it happened before because he would have not been able to jump and make that catch if his ACL had already torn. Now the question is could have that been prevented?
The answer is yes! All non-contact injuries can be prevented. It just takes working with the right people in order to do so. With the 100’s of athletes that we have worked with over the years, including the ones that have had ACL or several ACL injuries, we have had none of our athletes have a non-contact ACL injury after training with us for at least three months.
So much emphasis is put on the turf, the shoes, and the equipment that not a lot of attention is placed on what could have been done during his training in the off season to help prevent this. The NFL, like all other professional sport teams, makes it difficult for the strength coaches they have on staff because most players only work out with the team if they are forced to do so. Most are left to find their own people and sometimes it is not the best decision on their part because most coaches in the industry are not educated enough to provide the quality of training to not only improve their performance but to limit the risk of injury.
So how can you decided if the coaches you work with can do this for you?
Action Steps:
1. Look at their record. Check the list of their clients, google their names and see their injury history after training with this coach?
2. Ask your coach how they expect to accomplish this for you? You will be able to see if they have a plan or if they are just making it up on the fly.
3. Seek multiple options of coaches before you start and see which one makes most sense to you. The coaches that are able to do this for athletes have a lot of data backing up their method so it is more than just a sales pitch.
The choice of who to work with in preparing for a season is extremely important at any level so please take your time and make the right decision. Jordy Nelson will lose out on helping his team this season and his normal income because of this injury that could have been prevented. Contact us and we will make sure that this does not happen to you!
Sincerely,
Donny Mateaki
Deonte Cooper came to us after suffering three ACL injuries. After working with us for a couple of months and taking some exercises with him, Deonte has had two seasons for the University of Washington without an ACL injury.
