Why We All Need A “Process”

process

Every successful coach I have studied from John Wooden, Pete Carroll, Nick Saban and many others, they all have what they call a process.  Looking at it from a distance I realize this “process” is their own system of doing things.  No matter what sport or even in other fields (teaching, business, etc) all the most success people have a process.  It is paramount that we learn why do they have a process and how can we incorporate our own process into our own lives.

The reason why the most successful coaches have a process is because they systematize everything from meetings, to practice and even how they communicate with their athletes.  By creating a system you make sure that all the small details are covered and you do not miss anything.  People are more productive with systems.  A comparison to the business world would be a franchise.  A small percentage of new businesses make it past five years but a successful proven franchise has over a 95 percent success rate past five years.  The reason is because the franchise has all its systems; marketing, customers, sales and operations figured out so a new franchisee can just follow the system (process) and reap the rewards.  I recall under all my coaches in college and even coaches I kept a close eye on, everyone talked about paying attention to the details but some detail always was missed in preparation.  If th ey had a process to make sure they covered those small details, it would not be missed.

We all have our own careers and some of us coach.  We each can come up with our own process to make sure that we do not miss details and perform our best.  Some might benefit in reading on how the best in their field handles their day to day business and copy what they like. Others might have a great process but it is stuck in their heads.  If you can write it down and share it with people on your team so they too can perform at a high level.

Working with our athletes, we have let some things slip and now after recognizing it, we created a process so that it will no longer happen.  The most important thing is that you keep your eyes open for things that need to be improved and create a system so it won’t be missed.  Contact us if you want to find out how our process can help you achieve your goals.

Sincerely,

Donny Mateaki
