I had a great opportunity last week to meet the strength and conditioning coach of the Toronto Raptors; Jon Lee. It was a really exciting time for me to continue learning and watch athletes perform in a competitive match up in Portland.
I always find it fascinating, to hear about how team trainers are choosing to work with guys at that level–mostly because you are dealing with not only professionals, but also the human ego. The strength coach informed me that they are so athletic and advanced, that the majority of their time training is spent on injury prevention work, as opposed to lifting weights. This just stresses that the most important thing for this organization is that their players are available to play and not sidelined by injury.
The philosophy of Coach Lee, includes not taxing the players with lifting, because the season is a grind, with two to three games a week. That makes for a lot of time on the road. They spend time lifting weights before the season, and maintain what they have gained during the season. They are having a successful season so far, and their program is working for them.
We enjoy meeting with strength coaches at the collegiate and professional levels, to bring back knowledge that is current, and can be used with our athletes. It’s also key in keeping a cohesive relationship between our athletes that are moving into those levels, or already playing at those levels. Our mission is to help our athletes perform at their highest level. Wherever you might be, contact us now and let us help you take your game to the next level.
Thank you,
Donny Mateaki
