At some point, we all face barriers which hold us back from reaching our goals and fulfilling our potential. Sometimes those barriers are physical–running up a mountain, swimming a certain distance or lifting a certain amount of weight. Other times–and I would argue most of the time–the barriers holding us back, are mental. They are the preconceived ideas or thoughts that limit our performance, and hold us back from achieving our goals.
A prime example can be found in John Wooden–a name you’ve been hearing quite a bit around here, lately. He thought there was no way that he would be capable of winning a National Championship with the poor facilities he had at UCLA. However, once the team lost in the National Semi Final game in 1962, he became convinced that they could win a National Championship, despite his previous feelings. He had a taste of the potential they could achieve, and after that, the rest was history. The UCLA Bruins went on to win ten National Championships within the next twelve years.
We often meet athletes that do not realize the potential they have within themselves. Sometimes we even shock our athletes when we tell them about their potential to achieve. I told one of our athletes, that he had the potential to be a first or second round pick (after two ACL injuries) in the NFL draft. He was surprised at my assessment, yet now has an amazing opportunity to achieve that, after completing two outstanding seasons for the Washington Huskies.
Each person has their barriers, but it is our job to help you break through them. You can perform at a higher level, but you need someone to hold you accountable, and devise a plan that will give you the best chance to obtain your goals.
