How to Stay Healthy During the Season

The Fall sports season is about to begin, and one of the major concerns for coaches and athletes is how to stay healthy throughout the season.  We must look at all aspects of what is required for someone to perform at a high level, and the best things to do in order to recover for the next practice or game.

First, it is vital that athletes are consuming a balanced diet full of fruit, vegetables, carbohydrates, and protein.  Depending on the size of the athlete, they need to aim for three to six thousand calories per day.  This may sound like a lot, but with all of the practices, games, and the fact that most kids are still growing, those calories are used quickly.  Try and stay away from junk foods–such as fast food and sweets, soda and sugary drinks, as much as possible.  Water consumption needs to be half of your body weight in ounces (daily).

Next, we need to make sure our athletes are getting enough rest.  With school about to start, our athletes are faced with the challenge of balancing their academics alongside their sport.  Our athletes must learn to take advantage of any free time they have throughout the day and do their homework then.  If they can get a minimum of eight hours of sleep per night, it will give them an opportunity to fully recover before the next practice or game.  Several studies have been done, proving that the human body operates at its’ highest level if it gets a minimum of eight hours of sleep a night.  This is not an area to skimp on–though we understand that the traditional educational system, can make it difficult to do so.

The last thing we can do to help stay healthy throughout our season, is to have a great strength and conditioning program.  A great strength and conditioning program will ensure that your body stays strong and fast throughout the season, and does not lose any gains that were made during the off season.  At DM Athletics, we can provide you with the program you need to not only stay healthy, but to take your performance to the next level this season.

Implementing these three factors will give you the best opportunity at staying healthy throughout your season.  Contact us and let us help you reach your goals this year.

Sincerely,

Donny Mateaki
