Proper Conditioning

Every sport requires its own level of conditioning to be successful.  For instance, you may compare a marathon runner and an Olympic 100m sprinter.  They are two different athletes, competing in two different events.  Does it make sense that they have totally different workout programs to prepare them for their event?

The short answer is yes.  It does not make any sense that an athlete in an explosive sport (basketball, baseball, football, soccer, volleyball) has the same conditioning program as say, a marathon runner.   In order to condition properly for your sport, you need to look at the demands of the sport.  Let’s look at football for example.  In football, the athletes are going full speed for six to eight seconds, and resting from ten to thirty seconds on average.  Why would these athletes ever run a mile for their conditioning program (which is commonly found in many programs)?

The argument that most people make, is that their conditioning level will be great at the end of the game, because of the long distance running or biking.  That is not true.  There is a different type of conditioning that will improve an athlete’s conditioning level (for the end of games), dependent on their sport.  The reason being, that every sport stresses the body in a different way–so in essence, not every conditioning exercise will benefit every sport.

I learned this, while growing up and playing multiple sports.  When I was in shape for football, I would be out of shape for basketball.  When I was in shape for basketball, I would be out of shape for football.  Out of shape, meaning that my conditioning level was not appropriate for that particular sport, when making the transition.  It typically took around two weeks for my conditioning to catch up for the sport I was playing.
