The Power of Words

We know that the words we use are extremely powerful in shaping our beliefs and actions.  The reflections found within the pages of Introducing NLP by Josh O’Connor and John Seymour, takes our understanding far beyond this simple concept.

NLP argues that words such as  ‘can’t’, ‘need’ and ‘hope’ not only suggest lack to our brains, but also tells our subconscious mind that we will never do it.  The idea is to replace those words with ‘chose not’, ‘will’ and ‘I am’.  These words indicate that we have choices, and does not prevent us from learning how to accomplish said task in the future.

O’Connor and Seymour argue that the words we use are a sign of not only how we think, but what we believe.  When we believe in something, we then act as if it were true. Our actions maintain and reinforce what we believe.  Beliefs aren’t simply maps of what has happened, but also the blue print of future actions.

I’ve caught myself using negative words under certain circumstances, and changing those words has been really powerful.  I now have people who keep me accountable when and if I use disempowering terms–and just catching those moments and making a small change, makes me feel not only more in control, but excited about that future accomplishment.  Whether it is playing better in a game, coaching our athletes or even being a better father and husband, now I know I will do it!

It’s been my experience, that most people do not need some crazy amount of work to be the best athlete they can be.  They just need a few tweaks here and there that will make all the difference for them.  What will make the difference for you?  Contact us now, and see how far you can take your game!

Sincerely,
